Florence's unusual behavior, namely being nice and going on a cleaning spree, leads Louise to believe she is suicidal.

Louise grows suspicious in how Florence is behaving one day. She cleaned the entire apartment without griping and declines any help from Louise. Florence told Louise she plans to visit the top of the Empire State Building, gives her a prized possession and randomly attempts to call her uncle she hasn't spoken to in 20 years. When George reads a letter given to Louise from Florence after she left work, Louise suspects Florence might be contemplating suicide.
